The Quartz Countertop Installer's 5-Point Pre-Install Checklist

If you're installing Hanstone quartz—whether it's the dark veining of Matterhorn or the subtle warmth of Aurelia—the difference between a smooth project and a $22,000 redo often comes down to what you do before the slab touches the substrate.

This checklist is for installers, shop managers, and general contractors who've been burned by assumptions. I've reviewed 200+ unique countertop projects annually for 4 years. About 60% of on-site failures traced back to something that could've been caught in 5 minutes with a simple verification step.

So here are the 5 things I check on every Hanstone install before we let anyone near the CNC saw.

Step 1. Verify the Slab Against the PO Before Unwrapping

This one sounds obvious, but it's the most common miss. We received a batch of 12 slabs flagged as "Aurelia Hanstone Quartz" against our spec order. Everything looked right on the paperwork. The pallet markings matched. We unrolled the protective wrap and started templating against the design layout.

Then our shop foreman—who's been doing this for 15 years—stopped. "The veining pattern's different," he said. We checked the Certificates of Origin paperwork. Turns out: the resin layer had been applied at a higher brightness, making the color read slightly cooler than our Aurelia reference sample. The difference was roughly Delta E of 2.1. According to Pantone standards, Delta E < 2 is considered imperceptible. Delta E 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers. This was noticeable.

The move: Before removing any protective film, cross-check the slab number, color code, and production batch against the purchase order. If you're working with a shade like Matterhorn Hanstone Quartz—where the dark veins vary by batch—hold a fresh calibration sample next to the slab in natural light. Don't just rely on digital photos. We rejected that batch and asked the distributor to re-verify. It cost 3 extra days but saved us from installing 4 incorrectly-tinted tops.

Step 2. Check Substrate Flatness to Within 1/8" Over 10 Feet

Countertops, especially Hanstone quartz, are manufactured to tight thickness tolerances. The substrate (usually plywood or particleboard) needs to be flat. Not "kind of flat." Flat.

I've seen installers use a 4-foot level and say, "Yup, looks good." Then when the quartz is set, you get a rock along the seam or a visible dip near the sink cutout. On a 200+ project run we did two years ago, we had 7 callbacks in 3 months. Every single one was a substrate flatness issue. The fix: a $200 laser level and 10 minutes of checking before the slab is cut.

The move: Use a straightedge (at least 6 feet) and a feeler gauge. The maximum allowable deviation is ⅛" across 10 feet. Mark any high or low spots with a pencil. If you find a dip >⅛", level it with a self-leveling compound or shim the substrate before gluing. This is the kind of check that feels tedious until you've had to grind down a $2,800 slab that's already glued in.

Step 3. Confirm the Topcoat Orientation (Yes, It Matters)

Here's something I didn't believe until it bit us. Quartz slabs, including Hanstone, have a topcoat. It's a thin, non-porous resin layer that's applied to the finished face during manufacturing. The back face is typically untreated and slightly more porous.

Conventional wisdom says: "Just put the nice side up." But if you've stored slabs leaning against a wall, the topcoat side might be facing away from you. If you lay it down with the back face up, the protection layer isn't there. It'll stain within days from cooking oil or red wine. Ask me how I know.

The move: When you receive the slab, inspect both faces. The topcoat side usually has a slight sheen. If you run your finger across it, it feels smoother—almost like a polished finish. The back side feels millimeter-slightly rougher. If you're not sure, ask the supplier for a batch-specific verification guide. For Hanstone, the finished face is always the one facing up during CNC machining in their factory. But if the slab was flipped in transit, it's on you to verify.

Step 4. Inspect ALL Edges—Not Just the Show Face

This flows from the role of a quality inspector: I scan everything. Not just the surface that'll be exposed. The back edges, the cutout areas, the corners.

In Q1 2024, our team installed a Hanstone Calacatta slab with a full-backseplash. The visible edges were perfect. But when we started cutting for the sink, we found a ⅛" air bubble in the resin layer about 4 inches from the front edge. It was completely hidden by the protective coating on the slab's edge. The customer saw it during the final walk-through. It cost us a 3-day delay and $1,200 in materials to re-cut a new piece.

The move: Use a strong flashlight. Angle it across every edge—front, back, and corners. Look for bubbles, chips, or delamination. If you're using water for the wet saw, check that the water isn't softening the edge seal before you cut. Any inconsistency >1mm across a 6-inch edge is a candidate for rejection before you start machining.

Step 5. Do the 3-Second Water Test on Scrap Offcuts

This is a test I recommend to every new installer. Once you've got a scrap piece from the CNC cut (before you've installed), place a few drops of water on it. Let it sit for 30 seconds. Then wipe it off.

If the surface leaves a dark spot or a wet mark that takes more than 15 seconds to dry, you've got a topcoat integrity problem. That quartz will stain under normal use. According to industry standards, properly sealed quartz should shed water immediately—no wet mark remains. If you get a persistent spot, re-check Step 3. You might have installed the slab upside down.

I implemented this after we had a batch where the resin layer was under-cured by about 8 hours in the factory. The first install looked flawless. After 2 weeks of use, we had 4 different homeowners reporting permanent discoloration near the drainboard area. The water test would have caught it in 3 seconds during fabrication.

One last thing: My experience is based on about 200 mid-to-large residential and light commercial projects mostly in the Toronto area. If you're working with ultra-large format slabs or doing commercial kitchens with heavy-duty cleaning protocols, your tolerance thresholds might need to be tighter. Adjust accordingly.
