Hanstone Quartz Technical Specifications — For Architects, Designers & Specifiers

Complete material data, certifications, test results, and installation requirements. Everything you need to specify Hanstone Quartz with confidence.

Material Properties

All values based on internal testing per ASTM and EN standards unless noted. Results may vary by collection.

Property Value / Range Test Standard Notes
Quartz Content 93–95% by weight Internal XRF analysis Remainder: polymer binder and pigments
Surface Hardness (Mohs) 7.0 typical ASTM C1895 Harder than marble (3.5–5); comparable to granite
Flexural Strength 38–44 MPa ASTM C880 Varies by color due to pigment loading
Compressive Strength 220–260 MPa ASTM C170
Water Absorption < 0.04% by weight ASTM C97 Non-porous; no sealing required
Scratch Resistance (Vickers) HV 1,050–1,200 ISO 6507 Resistant to steel knives; avoid diamond-edge tools on surface
Stain Resistance Pass — Class A EN 14617-4 Tested vs. coffee, wine, mustard, lemon juice (24h contact)
Chemical Resistance Pass — Class A EN 14617-10 Resistant to household acids/bases; avoid HF and strong oxidizers
Heat Resistance Up to 150°C (302°F) Internal test Sustained heat above 150°C may cause discoloration; use trivets
UV Resistance Good (indoor) ASTM D4329 Not designed for prolonged direct outdoor UV exposure
Linear Thermal Expansion 21 × 10⁻⁶ /°C ASTM E228 Expansion joints required for runs > 3m in high-temperature environments
Density 2.36–2.42 g/cm³ ASTM C97 ~15–18 kg/m² at 2cm; ~22–27 kg/m² at 3cm

Note on Test Values

Published values represent the typical production range. Individual batches may fall within ±10% of published values. For critical structural calculations, contact our technical team for collection-specific test certificates.

Installation Requirements

Cabinet Support

Cabinets must be level within 3mm over 3 linear metres. Spans exceeding 800mm without cabinet support require full-length plywood or MDF substrate (minimum 19mm). Overhangs up to 300mm unsupported on 30mm slabs.

Adhesive & Seams

Use color-matched epoxy adhesive designed for engineered stone. Seams should be 1–2mm wide, filled with matching epoxy, and polished flush. Seam placement should minimize visual impact.

Expansion Gaps

Maintain 3–5mm expansion gap at all walls and vertical surfaces. For commercial installations with floor heating or high temperature variation (>30°C range), consult our technical team.

Care & Maintenance

Recommended

  • Clean with mild dish soap and warm water for everyday use
  • Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge
  • Wipe spills immediately, especially acidic substances
  • Use trivets or hot pads for pots and pans
  • Use a cutting board to protect knife blades (not the surface)
  • Non-bleach household cleaners for tougher stains

Avoid

  • Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads
  • Bleach in high concentrations (> 3% sodium hypochlorite)
  • Drain cleaner, oven cleaner, paint remover
  • Prolonged direct sunlight exposure in outdoor installations
  • Heavy impact on edges — quartz can chip under point impact
  • Sealing — Hanstone does not require it and sealers may affect appearance
