How to Choose Quality Drywall Materials: Corner Beads, Cement Board, and Fire-Resistant Plasterboard

If you're buying corner bead, cement board, fire-resistant plasterboard, gypsum board, C channel with holes, or office ceiling grid, you've probably noticed that prices vary wildly and every supplier claims theirs is 'high quality.' The truth is, there's no single best option for everyone. What works for a high-rise commercial build can be overkill for a small residential renovation—and vice versa.

  • Fire-resistant plasterboard: Choose a board with a 1-hour rating. If the local code requires 2 hours in certain areas, only upgrade those specific sections.
  • Corner bead for sale: Metal corner bead is a safe choice. Avoid the ultra-thin 28-gauge (0.4mm) unless you're willing to accept dents.
  • C channel with holes: Standard 1-⅝ inch deep channel works for most drop ceilings. Check that holes align with the grid tee cross slots.

The temptation is to go with the cheapest supplier to keep the budget low. I did that once.
